Jon Thompson is Head of the Government Finance Profession. Our community of nearly 10,000 Finance Professionals, split equally between trainee and fully qualified accountants, is the largest professional grouping in central government and it is growing all the time.
We are represented within all the Professional Skills for Government (PSG) career groupings (e.g Policy, Operational, and Corporate Services Delivery) across more than 50 departments and their agencies. Finance Professionals play a crucial role in driving forward better financial management in these organisations and embedding finance in the management process.
As a core skill within the PSG programme, better financial management is now not just a responsibility of the finance community. To help raise awareness of it, free baseline level training called Finance Skills for All has been developed by government for government to improve the finance skills of all civil servants.
Finance Professionals, however, will continue to play an increasing role at the heart of decision support within their organisations and be required to demonstrate leadership and broader experience as part of their own career advancement.
