The Civil Service : A Partial History

At Civil Service Live at Olympia in 2009, a special exhibition was staged that brought together some fascinating pieces of history from the past 150 years of the Civil Service.  This on-line version reproduces that exhibition.

A full history of the civil service would fill many volumes.  This exploration of the archives does not pretend to be a full history, but does offer a fascinating look at how the Civil Service has evolved since mid-Victorian times, illustrated with documents and artefacts owned by the National Archives, by the People's History Museum of Manchester and by individual departments.  Without their help and generosity, even this partial history wouldn't be available.
