The Government has set out the need for greater transparency across its operations to enable the public to hold public bodies and politicians to account. As part of the transparency agenda, the Prime Minister made the following commitments with regard to procurement and contracting, in his letter of 31st May 2010:
These requirements apply to all central government departments including their agencies, all non-departmental public bodies, and NHS bodies and trading funds. Departments are responsible for meeting these requirements. Separate requirements apply to the wider public sector, such as local authorities.
The Cabinet Office has produced guidance to assist departments in meeting the procurement and contracting transparency requirements and ensure a consistent approach.
