Digital Champions

Take a look at the Digital Champion job description at www.go-on.co.uk/champions work and mobilise the Champs in your organisation or inspire your customers to help pass IT on.  You could also use corporate volunteering days or adopt or adopt the artwork in our Digital Champion toolkit.

Make a massive difference at a local level. Perhaps there are already initiatives in your local area that could do with your support; gain a great community partner by helping them out.

Be a responsible employer of choice and create opportunities for their development. Introduce your employees to the wonders of the world wide web. Don't worry - we've got plenty of resources to help you.

Incremental market of interest? 1 in 5 not online = 20% market growth opportunity! Want lower transaction costs and effective communcations 24/7? An online customer base could be the answer.

Campaigns

itea and biscuits, Age UK's annual internet beginner campaign, is taking place from 19 - 25 September; your organisation could run an event, provide sign-posting or encourage others to lend a hand. For all the info, go to www.ageuk.org.uk/work-and-learning/technology-and-internet/itea-and-biscuits

If there's a local initiative or event already happening in your area, don't be shy - lend a hand! And if there isn't then do something about it - set one up…

Go ON

Race Online 2012 has created the Go ON Get more out of life online badge and messaging so that organisations can highlight the benefits of the Internet to people who aren’t already online through marketing and communications. It's easy to adopt and is great to signpost for Internet beginners and Digital Champions.  Go to www.raceonline2012.org/go-on for more info

We've designed a pack of marketing materials to help you to mobilise the Digital Champions in your organisation. From badges to posters, t-shirts to Get Started leaflets, there's loads your organisation can adopt or adapt to create your own Digital Champions welcome pack.  See www.raceonline2012.org/digital-champion-toolkit to download the artwork.

Give

We are a small team and are always greatful for support in running the core activities of our campaign. If you are a design agency, have a film crew, can provide a courtesy secondment or something similar please let us know!

Pass on your PC or move your Mac! If you have equipment that can be donated, whether new or in good condition, why not give it to an initiative that can help people benefit from the internet; Microsoft (http://www.getonlineathome.org/) and Remploy (http://www.ecycleonline.co.uk/) are crying out for computers that they can refurbish.

Your Ideas

If you've got another idea about how to help people get online, let us know what it is you are doing in the detail box below. We love hearing and sharing new ideas!

How You Will Be Helping

The social and moral case

  • The way citizens and government interact will change, helping reduce social exclusion.
  • There will be more opportunities for education, employment and training.
  • Socially and economically excluded people will have increased access to the support and services they need.
  • Vulnerable people will become less isolated and better connected to the help they need.
  • Society will be transformed by creating a digital UK and helping everyone who wants to get online to do so.

The economic case

  • Our citizens and UK Plc will have a competitive advantage in the global knowledge economy.
  • The UK economy benefits to the tune of an estimated £22 billion.
  • Government services could save £900m annually, if all people currently both digitally and socially excluded were to move just one government contact a month online.
  • The 20% lowest income households would benefit from more than £1bn of savings from shopping and paying bills online.

Why get involved?

It makes financial sense

  • Commercial organisations that operate, recruit or contact their customers and/or employees online can access a new market of 8.7 million newly online people, reduce their transaction costs and gain market advantage.

It’s an investment in the future

  • Cut your internal communications costs and make your workforce more skilled and productive.

It’s an HR opportunity

  • Become a responsible, sought after employer by creating opportunities for staff development, training or volunteering.

It’s good for your CSR

  • Be a good corporate citizen and help employees and their families get online and save time and money.
