Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has a significant and growing impact on the environment with global emissions from its manufacture and use similar to those of the airline industry (Gartner 2007).
As a user of some of the most extensive computer systems in the world, the UK Government continues to seek ways in which to reduce this impact in the Public Sector, by using ICT as efficiently as practicable and balancing the impact by deploying ICT as a tool to achieve wider energy and carbon savings elsewhere.
The CIO Council’s Green Delivery Unit have recently updated the best practice advice and actions that organisations in both the public and private sector can take.
This has been brought together in the Green ICT Workbook and was endorsed by the CIO Council on 7th February 2011.
Comments and suggested additions for future versions are welcomed via the feedback form in the workbook.
