  • The Prime Minister announced on Tuesday 11th October that Jeremy Heywood, currently Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office would succeed Sir Gus O’Donnell as Cabinet Secretary, when Sir Gus retires at the end of this year . The Prime Minister also announced the intention to appoint a separate Head of the Civil Service to work alongside the Cabinet Secretary. Sir David Normington, the First Civil Service Commissioner has been asked to oversee the process for this appointment which is expected to be an internal competition among existing Permanent Secretaries.

  • Sir David Normington, the First Civil Service Commissioner and Commissioner for Public Appointments, published a formal consultation paper on 28 June 2011 seeking views on a package of reforms to simplify the current regulatory system for public appointments. The consultation closed on 28 September. Following a review of all the responses, the Commissioner for Pubic Appointments will set out next steps for public appointments regulation.
