Exam preparation

Information for exams officers about how to prepare for exam day.

Storing confidential material

Your need to have a strong and secure storage area where you can store confidential exams material such as question papers.

Good practice

Your centre must meet the requirements detailed in JCQ's Instructions for conducting examinations.

Estimated or forecast grades

Estimated or forecast grades are the grades that a centre expects a candidate to achieve in an exam. The awarding bodies need this information to check against the final marks they award candidates.

Good practice
  • Collating the information. Set up a process to collate and track estimated or forecast grades with the actual grades when they are available. For some exams estimated grades are required at unit and subject levels.
  • Submitting the information. Each awarding body has slightly different procedures. You can submit forms electronically, but if you are filling in forms by hand, ensure you do this carefully as they will be read by an optical mark reader. Keep copies of what you have submitted and of responses from the awarding bodies.
  • Meeting the deadlines. Set internal deadlines ahead of those set by awarding bodies and make sure everyone involved is aware of these.
