eUpdate for local authorities: Issue 1

29 July 2008

Announcement

Distribution of early years foundation stage profile handbook and assessment scales reference sheet

Local authorities are responsible for supplying printed copies of the Early years foundation stage (EYFS) profile handbook and Assessment scales reference sheet to private, voluntary and independent (PVI) settings who need to complete EYFS profiles and submit data for children in 2008/9.

Under the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage published in 2007, an EYFS profile must be completed for every child during the academic year in which they reach their fifth birthday. This applies to all children attending settings, regardless of whether or not they are accessing government funding for their place. The framework has legal force through an Order and Regulations made under the Childcare Act 2006.

Each PVI setting due to submit EYFS profile data in June 2009 is entitled to two copies of each publication. We would be grateful if you could list the settings in your area that will need copies on the attached form so we can make sure you get the right amount. (Please note that maintained schools have each received two copies of the handbook and scales reference sheet, these were distributed by NAA at the start of July).

You will also need print copies of the handbook and reference sheet to support your moderators and other stakeholders. There is only a limited supply of printed copies, therefore they will be allocated as follows:

  • one copy for each non-practitioner moderator (practitioners should have access to a copy at their setting)
  • one copy per every 50 schools in your authority (for other stakeholders).

We would be grateful if you complete the relevant sections in the attached form to let us know how many copies you will need, and return the completed form to eyfsplink@qca.org.uk by Wednesday 20 August 2008.

Two examples of how to work out how many copies you need are given below:

Example - local authority A Number of copies
10 PVI settings 20
16 non practitioner moderators 16
200 schools 8
Total 44
Example - local authority B Number of copies
6 PVI settings 12
9 non practitioner moderators 9
275 schools 6
Total 27

Both the profile handbook and scales reference sheet can also be downloaded from the new EYFS profile web pages on the NAA website at www.naa.org.uk/eyfsp.
