Shakespeare set sections

The set sections for the 2011 year 9 optional English tests are from As you like it and Romeo and Juliet.

The sections for 2011 are:

  • Romeo and Juliet: Act 3 Scene 2 (lines 28-95) and Act 3 Scene 5 (lines 59-122)
  • As You Like It: Act 1 Scene 1 (lines 1-55) and Act 2 Scene 3 (lines 1-68)

There are two sections specified for each play and pupils should study both of the set sections in order to complete the test.

The Shakespeare paper

Each paper (one for each of the two plays) contains a task based on two extracts drawn from one of the set sections.

Each paper is based on one of the following four areas of assessment:

  • text in performance
  • character and motivation
  • language of the text
  • ideas, themes and issues.

The two papers may each cover a different area of assessment. This ensures that all areas are covered over time across the different plays and that the areas of assessment selected are best suited to the set sections.

Useful resources

Existing support material relevant to the study and assessment of all plays can be found in booster kits produced by the DCSF. Past test papers are also helpful and can be ordered via QCDA orderline.

There are useful resources on the National curriculum website, and you could also contact broadcasters, regional theatres, subject associations and educational publishers.
