Google, Microsoft and LinkedIn Join Clearspring to Define Open Web Content Sharing

OExchange Enables Users to Share Any Digital Content They Choose, to Any Online Service

Bookmark and Share

McLean, VA. - June 2, 2010 — Clearspring Technologies, in cooperation with leading online service providers and social networks, today introduced an open sharing protocol, OExchange ( OExchange establishes a common way for services (i.e. Google Buzz, Posterous, etc.) to receive content, defines how third party tools, like the AddThis platform, can dynamically discover and share content to these new services, as well as how sharing tools can read and set a user's sharing preferences.

The Social Web consists of a diverse and ever growing eco-system of services that enable you to share with your friends, blog, like, translate, e-mail, save for later and more. By providing access to these services to their readers, publishers maximize distribution of their content leading to increased monetization opportunities. However, because every service speaks a different language or has a different integration scheme, providing access to all these services is difficult. OExchange solves this problem by defining an open protocol for third party sharing tools to discover and send content to these services.

"We are excited to be playing a role in building a more open and interoperable Web," said Hooman Radfar, co-founder and chief executive officer of Clearspring Technologies, the makers of largest universal sharing platform online, AddThis. "OExchange is a key component in providing a complete open solution for content sharing online. We are excited as it will enable a new generation of applications that can help better connect people with the communities they are about."

Open Web leaders such as Digg, Echo, Google, Instapaper, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Posterous, PrintFriendly, Springpad, StumbleUpon, Webs, and yfrog (Imageshack) have joined Clearspring in support of OExchange. A number of these services, like Google Buzz and Instapaper, have already implemented the protocol. This protocol, in conjunction with a number of others (OpenID, OAuth, etc) enables, for the first time, a complete open solution for sharing content online.

"The key to increasing the amount and quality of sharing online is smoothing out the user interaction. By simplifying the underlying mechanism for cross-site sharing with OExchange, people can focus on what they're sharing, rather than how, "said Chris Messina, Open Web Advocate at Google.

"To make the Social Web as Interoperable as the Document Web, it's key to have strong standards for sharing information. OExchange is an essential step to continuing the inexorable march towards a peer-to-peer social network where every node is a first class citizen." said Chris Saad, co-founder of and vice president of product strategy & community at Echo.

Clearspring continues build momentum around OExchange, which is licensed under the Open Web Foundation Agreement. Clearspring is reaching out to all the 300+ services currently integrated with the AddThis Platform and the over 800 waiting for support. Services adopting OExchange, will now automatically be supported by widely distributed sharing tools, like Clearspring's AddThis, enabling users to connect and share with a more rich set of online communities.
