Application of synthetic phonic knowledge and skills

The purpose of these writing samples is to demonstrate how children's independent phonic knowledge and skills are applied into writing. They have been gathered from children in targeted CLLD schools across the regions. The writing is being tracked and shows the progress that the children are making over time.

Each writing sample has been annotated giving:

  • the purpose of the writing
  • evidence of the application of phonic skills and knowledge
  • the age of the child
  • the child's response to their writing
  • an interpretation of the writing.

The application of children's phonic knowledge and skills in reading are of equal importance. It is within reading where decoding, the segmenting and blending of phonemes and their enunciation can also be captured.
