Next steps

This case study looks at the next steps of a secondary mathematics team after introducing Assessing Pupils' Progress (APP), including their future plans for the APP process.

There is a feeling that APP isn’t something that can be introduced overnight and the mathematics team are convinced that starting APP by looking at the teaching and learning is the right way round. Much of the team are becoming more confident with their use of day-to-day assessment strategies and are exploring ways of carrying out periodic judgements on the basis of a secure day-to-day approach. They recognise that there is much work still to be done exploring standardisation and moderation and that only tentative steps have been taken on these issues.

As teacher confidence grows, they are moving away from the use of formal mark books. They consider this an important step. For this department, APP is not an additional and time-consuming layer of assessment, but rather a more effective approach to assessment that will encourage teachers to change what they are doing in lessons.
