Lessons learned and next steps

  • Arranging for STEM ambassadors to work with small groups of pupils made it easier for them to transmit their knowledge and understanding of the application of science.
  • The pupils took control of their research. Behaviour was much improved and pupils gained a lot from the conversations with ambassadors.
  • The STEM ambassadors needed regular breaks – one slot off in an hour – otherwise they found it too intense!
  • A close liaison between the NYBEP and the local authority science team has made it much easier to develop the speed dating package.

Next steps

  • Extend the number of schools making use of the speed dating idea.
  • Build up the links between the questions asked and the curriculum the pupils are following.
  • Extend the speed dating package to make it available to younger age-groups.
