The DfE is conducting a review of the primary and secondary National Curriculum.
This site contains the statutory programmes of study for National Curriculum subjects which maintained schools must follow until a new curriculum is in place.

Statutory content

Mathematical thinking is important for all members of a modern society as a habit of mind for its use in the workplace, business and finance; and for personal decision-making.  Mathematics is fundamental to national prosperity in providing tools for understanding science, engineering, technology and economics. It is essential in public decision-making and for participation in the knowledge economy. Mathematics equips pupils with uniquely powerful ways to describe, analyse and change the world.

Programme of study

The statutory programmes of study are an important element of the wider curriculum and establish the core entitlement for all pupils.

A comparison tool allowing teachers to compare elements of the programme of study for different subjects across the National Curriculum.

Following the decision not to proceed with the revised 2009 versions, these level descriptions should be used until further notice.
