Writing your behaviour policy

To make a policy effective you need to take great care in how it is written and who you involve. Find out how a policy can help you and how to write it.

Why have a policy?

A clear and well-defined policy will help you:

  • shape a positive ethos for your school in which everyone can feel respected, safe and secure
  • create an effective learning and teaching environment
  • gain the confidence and commitment of the whole school community including parents/carers
  • attract and retain high quality and motivated staff.

Who could be involved?

A policy can be personal to your school, actively involving in its development:

  • governors
  • all staff, including ancillary staff and other professionals who work closely with the school
  • parents and carers
  • a range of learners
  • partners and agencies, including voluntary organisations and schools that you collaborate with.

Writing your behaviour policy

Schools are free to decide how and when they write their policies and who to involve – as long as they meet statutory requirements. For more information on these requirements, see the Education and Inspections Act 2006.

Your behaviour policy may include:

  • underlying principles
  • policy expectations
  • roles and responsibilities
  • code of conduct
  • rewards and sanctions
  • targeted support for learners
  • consultation, monitoring and review process for the policy.
