Introduction to the renewed secondary Frameworks

Introduction to 2008 renewed Frameworks to build on the original 2002 Frameworks for teaching English, mathematics, science and ICT. They are based on the programmes of study for the secondary curriculum. The Frameworks are designed to increase pupils' access to excellent teaching and engaging, purposeful learning that will enable them to make good progress through Key Stages 3 and 4.

Frameworks overall format, structure and organisation

There is a common structure across the renewed English, mathematics, science and ICT Frameworks. The four areas of the Framework

A short summary of the four main English subject areas: Speaking and listening, Reading, Writing and Language. There has been a change in emphasis with the requirement of a wide range of reading and the study of language from a more historical and linguistic point of view.
The aims

A list of the aims of the Framework for secondary English, which is based on the new programmes of study for Key Stages 3 and 4, and is designed to promote continuity and progression from Key Stage 2 through to the end of Key Stage 4 by focusing more on specific, consistent targets.
The structure

An explanation of the two-dimensional structure of the Framework whereby objectives are arranged vertically by year and horizontally by strand. There are ten horizontal strands that act like progress pathways that also integrate with the year groups and provide a more coherent planning structure.

Rationale behind the renewed ICT Framework, which builds on the original ICT Framework published in 2002, and is designed to increase pupils' access to excellent ICT teaching, and engaging, purposeful learning that will enable them to make good progress through Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

The aims of the Framework

A breakdown of the aims of the Framework, which are: to provide guidance on planning and teaching; to incorporate existing guidance on day-to-day and periodic assessment; to increase the emphasis on the key concepts, key processes and functional skills; to build on what pupils have learned in Key Stage 2; to ensure that ICT skills are integrated with knowledge and understanding in a range of contexts; and to support planning and to build on existing National Strategies resources.
The structure of the Framework

Functional skills are facilitated by the flexibility of the Framework structure, with strands of progression across the age range, ensures that learners are not restricted in their achievement only to Level 1 in Key Stage 3 and Level 2 in Key Stage 4.

Revisions to objectives in Years 7, 8 and 9

An explanation of how the objectives in the Framework for secondary mathematics have been revised, in order to make the understanding and interpreting of them easier for teachers. These revisions also include new attainment targets as part of the Key Stage 3 programme of study.
Objectives in Years 10 and 11
