Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL): Improving behaviour, improving learning

Resources to help primary schools develop children's social, emotional and behavioural skills, targeted at schools who have identified the social and emotional aspects of learning as a key focus. Topics include assemblies and follow-up ideas for work in class. The publications are presented in a wide range of languages.

Theme 1: New beginnings

Materials relating to the primary Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) theme ‘New beginnings’, which focuses on developing children's skills in four key areas: empathy, self-awareness, social skills and motivation. This is part of the SEAL: 'Improving behaviour, improving learning' materials.
Theme 2: Getting on and falling out

Materials relating to the primary Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) theme ‘Getting on and falling out’, which focuses on developing children's skills in three key areas: empathy, managing feelings (with a focus on anger) and social skills. This is part of the SEAL: 'Improving behaviour, improving learning' materials.
Theme 3: Say no to bullying

Materials relating to the primary Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) theme ‘Say no to bullying’, which focuses on what bullying is, how it feels, why people bully, how we can prevent and respond to it, and how children can tackle this problem. This is part of the SEAL: 'Improving behaviour, improving learning' materials.
Theme 4: Going for goals!

Materials relating to the primary Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) theme ‘Going for goals!’, which aims to develop children's self-awareness and promote goal-motivated behaviour. It gives an important opportunity for all children's abilities, qualities and strengths to be valued. This is part of the SEAL: 'Improving behaviour, improving learning' materials.
Theme 5: Good to be me

Materials relating to the primary Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) theme ‘Good to be me’, which focuses on developing children's skills in three key areas: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy. This is part of the SEAL: 'Improving behaviour, improving learning' materials.
Theme 6: Relationships

Materials relating to the primary Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) theme ‘Relationships’, which explores feelings, including loss, within the context of our important relationships including family and friends. This is part of the SEAL: 'Improving behaviour, improving learning' materials.
Theme 7: Changes

Materials relating to the primary Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) theme ‘Changes’, which aims to give children an understanding of different types of change, positive and negative, and equip them to manage their feelings. This is part of the SEAL: 'Improving behaviour, improving learning' materials.

Seven whole-school theme-based interactive and illustrated assemblies which are part of the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) resources.

SEAL Development Group 2006–7

Introduction to projects in nine Local Authorities looking at SEAL in early years settings and primary schools. Includes handbooks, guides, questionnaires, planning grids and other resources. Newcastle resources address visual impairment. Others are more general but some target particular year groups. The projects are from Northumberland, Devon (Ilfracombe), Kirklees, Telford and Wrekin, Barnsley, Newcastle, Manchester, Somerset and Merton (South London). They include red set (Foundation), blue set (Years 1 and 2), yellow set (Years 3 and 4) and green set (Years 5 and 6) curriculum materials.

SEAL: Assembly 7 – Changes

Document containing three stories based on the theme of change. Children are required to imagine that they are one of the boys or girls in each story and think about how they might feel if those changes happened to them. This resource is a part of the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) materials that are designed to provide a whole-school approach to promoting social, emotional and behavioural skills.

SEAL: Additional assembly 6 – Changes

Document containing a story based on the theme changes. It is designed so that pupils understand that while some of the changes are exiting, others are uncomfortable. This resource is a part of the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) materials that are designed to provide a whole-school approach to promoting social, emotional and behavioural skills.
