Developing quality through leadership: Medway

Case study from Medway LA’s project on developing quality through leadership. The project evolved through reflection on the professional development needs of the leaders and managers in the six settings, within the context of the Key Elements of Effective Practice (KEEP). It was aimed at supporting the role of leadership and management in private, voluntary and independent (PVI) settings, through the use of a professional development file.

Sustaining Success: Gloucestershire: Lydney Early Years Centre

Case study focusing on moving the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education into the Reception year from Gloucestershire's Lydney Early Years Centre.

Process

Details of the process, which included consistency in paperwork, attendance at Reggio Emilia courses, and discussions and training on observing and documenting children's learning.
Practice

Examples of emerging practice, which included making planning more purposeful, involving children in their learning, ensuring that practitioners were more aware of children's learning and making transition more consistent.

Information about the next steps, which focused on involving parents in their child's learning, extending child-initiated play and participating in the Effective Early Learning quality assurance scheme.

Sustaining Success: Torbay: Kings and Queens Neighbourhood Nursery

Case study focusing on developing effective communication for successful learning from Torbay: Kings and Queens Neighbourhood Nursery.

Process

Details of the process, which included developing team, reflective and adult–child communication by holding workshops and analysing systems already in place. Progress of ten children was also tracked using the Passport for communication, language and literacy.
Practice

Example of emerging practice which uncovered the need for more discussions between staff about individual children’s progress, likes and next steps to inform planning.

Sustaining Success: Hertfordshire: Arlesdene Nursery School

Case study focusing on the transition to, during and from nursery and the value of the keyworker system to parents.

Practice

Examples of emerging practices, including modifications to the intake meeting for new parents, a change in the transition from daycare to the nursery, further support for parents in the transition to primary school and stronger links with the main primary school.
Possibilities

Information about the next steps, which include developing the parent-support package for their children’s transition to primary school and creating an action plan to look at transition and special educational needs (SEN).

Sustaining Success: Gloucestershire: Hatherley Early Years Centre

A case study that focuses on developing partnerships and services through a whole-site approach at and beyond Hatherley for the children (from birth to seven years old), their families and the local community, through the delivery of Every Child Matters, securing successful education and development.

Process

Information about the process, which included the completion of various training, and the EYC manager and school headteacher attending conferences and meetings together to provide opportunities for discussion and planning.
Practice

Examples of the emerging practices, which included child-centred or initiated learning, improved partnerships between the Early Years Centre (EYC) and school, common assessment, improved transitions from the EYC to the school, development of holiday activities to involve parents and carers, and joint responsibility between the school and EYC for developing initiatives.

Developing quality through leadership: Nottinghamshire

A case study from Nottinghamshire LA that focused on supporting practitioners to develop their leadership skills. Details of the rationale behind the project, what the project entailed, the impact it made and ideas for next steps are included.

Developing quality through leadership: Croydon

Case study focusing on reflecting on and evaluating the effectiveness of existing support and developing new strategies to extend support. The five settings involved were two pre-schools, two day nurseries and one independent school. All the settings we identified for the project demonstrated effective leadership and management skills, but upon closer analysis had areas that needed development.

Case study from Reading LA’s project on developing quality through leadership. The scheme encouraged strong leadership and staff development through reflective practice, peer observation and teamwork, which are all recognised as important factors in raising quality.
