Year 2 intensive reading support

These materials are for literacy consultants/leading teachers to use in some low achieving Year 2 classes. The materials provide a model of support and related materials for the literacy consultant to 'coach' Year 2 teachers to support effective teaching of guided (and shared) reading with the target group.

Day 1 Session 1: Plan Year 2 reading support

This session aims to identify Year 2 reading as a focus and the programme of support and identifying key actions for consultant and the school with the headteacher and SMT.
Day 2 Session 2: Assessing the class using a running record

The aims of this session are to assess Year 2 children working between levels 1b and 2b using running records and identify the target group.
Day 2 Session 3: Grouping, setting focuses for guided reading and planning

The aims of this session are to group the children who have been assessed, identify guided reading strategies to focus on for these children and plan guided reading lesson(s) with the Year 2 teacher.
Day 2 Session 4: Audit of Year 2 reading resources

The aims of this session are to audit the range, quantity and suitability of shared and guided reading resources for Year 2, draft recommended points for action and discuss recommendations with headteacher or the literacy coordinator.
Day 3 Session 5: Observation, demonstration, review of the reading environment

The aims of this session are to observe Year 2 teacher(s) taking shared reading and provide feedback, teach a guided reading group for Year 2 teacher(s) to observe and review the Year 2 classroom reading environment.
Day 3 Session 6: Shared reading – feedback and planning

The aims of this session are to review the shared reading session and give feedback to the teacher and plan a unit of work (one week) focusing on shared reading.
Day 3 Session 7: Staff meeting – planning an additional reading session

The looks at delivering a staff meeting on planning an additional reading session. These materials are for literacy consultants and leading teachers to use in some low achieving Year 2 classes.
Day 4 Session 8: Observation and demonstration

The aims of this session are to observe Year 2 teachers taking guided reading and provide feedback and to model shared reading with Year 2 class for teacher to observe.
Day 4 Session 9: Evaluation of the support

This looks at evaluating the effectiveness of the support, identifying the next steps, and reviewing raising attainment plan (RAP) actions.
