Working with Teaching Assistants

This module explores the deployment and management of teaching assistants within the mathematics department. Having carried out a review of current practice it helps you to identify priorities and possible actions to address those priorities.

Objectives

  • To enable teachers to improve their ability to manage teaching assistants effectively.
  • To identify good practice in the management and deployment of teaching assistants.
  • To identify priorities and formulate actions to address them.

Preliminary task – find out how teaching assistants are involved in the mathematics department. Download and complete the attached question sheet, Working with teaching assistants, before you continue. This will provide you with enough information to enable to you to assess the stage the department is currently at.

To help with planning the way ahead use the attached review and then complete the task.

The statements in the review can be broadly classified as relating to:

  • leadership and management
  • CPD for teaching assistant.
  • planning
  • teaching and learning
  • assessment
  • evaluation.

Task – Identify priorities: Go through the statements and quickly classify each of them according to one of the above criteria. Identify those aspects from the list above that you feel will make the greatest difference to pupils’ progress in mathematics. You will probably identify several but try to focus on pupil progress. Choose no more than three.
