Case study: Integrating Early Years Foundation Stage approaches to assessment in Years 1 and 2
- Date: April 2010
- Programme: Personalisation and Progression
- Focus: Building bridges between Reception and Year 1
- Number in series: 7
- Phase: Early Years/Primary
- Key stage: Key Stage 1
- DCSF ref: 00289-2010PDF-EN-07
On reviewing their assessment in Key Stage 1 this primary school decided that they needed to focus more on the individual child. What was in place in Year 1 was in contrast to the high-quality child-centred approaches to assessment in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) where detailed 'learning journey' records of observations, photographs and quotes from the children were being used to chart their development and self-adhesive foot-shaped notes identified appropriate next steps following each observation. The records were being successfully completed by teachers and teaching assistants (TAs) and annotated to link to the EYFS Profile.
