Julia's Year 3 teacher will want to ensure that her level 3 skills are consolidated and that she continues to be introduced to a wide range of texts.

In guided reading and individual reading conferences, Julia needs the challenge of making inferences about more demanding texts. She might be introduced to other types of story structures in whole-class reading, for example quest stories, to enable her to compare them with the 'mountain' structure that she understands so well. The Primary Framework narrative unit 2 on myths and legends is likely to be a useful resource here.

The Strand 8 end-of-year objective 'identify features that writers use to provoke readers' reactions' will be a useful focus to help Julia to engage further with a writer’s use of language. Teaching might include introducing alternative versions of familiar or traditional stories, particularly those with strong narrative voices, to develop her understanding of how writers deliberately shape a reader’s response through their choice of language. The poetry unit on language play might also help her to develop her understanding and use of figurative language.
