Annotation of poem 'A Case of Murder'

Task 1

This evidence of a pupil's work in reading and the teacher's assessment exemplifies the level judgement of a pupil working at secure level 4 in Year 7.

Assessment commentary

These annotations to the poem provide evidence for AFs 3 and 5, which meets the level 4 criteria. Although the later annotations show a less sure grasp of the poem's conclusion, most of the notes indicate a secure use of inference in building up an understanding of the situation and the boy's behaviour. Some notes show detailed attention to the writer's use of language, which meets some of the level 4 criteria (identifying the use of repetition). Others, which comment on the effect of the writer's language on the reader, begin to address those for level 5.
