Pupil F enjoys all aspects of English, reads widely and is a gifted writer. She has extensive skills to draw on, and her writing reflects her appreciation of different genres and styles of texts as well as her willingness to engage imaginatively and ambitiously with different tasks.

  • Internet message – ‘SOS!’

    Assessment focuses: AF1–8 Context Pupils had read and studied Z for Zachariah by Robert C. O'Brien and had been encouraged to read other novels with a similar theme independently, for example How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff and The Road by Cormac McCarthy. They were asked to imagine they were living in a post-apocalyptic world and to write a message to be posted on the internet, describing their plight and asking for help. Pupil's work

  • Tabloid editorial – ‘Congratulations! You’re a negligent mother!’

    Assessment focuses: AF1–8 Context As part of a unit on media, pupils investigated features of editorials in different newspapers, including how they are written to influence and position a reader. Pupils were asked to adopt features of a tabloid editorial in their own piece of writing, using a news story they had invented. Pupil's work

  • Review – The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

    Assessment focuses: AF1–8 Context Pupils were given a choice of books to read for independent study and asked to write a response in whatever form they thought appropriate. Pupil F chose to write a detailed analytical review of the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. Pupil's work

  • Short story – ‘Death or deception’.

    Assessment focuses: AF1–8 Context Pupils had been looking at narrative structure and in particular the scope within short stories to manipulate structure for dramatic effect. Pupils were asked to write their own story, adopting a particular genre and focusing deliberately on features of structure for impact. Pupil F chose to exploit the thriller or mystery genre in her story, ‘Death or deception’. Pupil's work

    Across this collection Pupil F has used a wide range of structures appropriate to purpose and audience. There is greater control in the shorter pieces, but although there is some clumsiness at sentence level in the two extended pieces of writing, this is more than outweighed by the degree of ambition demonstrated. Overall, the level 8 criteria are met.

  • Overall assessment judgement

    Pupil F has demonstrated considerable skill across this collection, which contains a range of pieces illustrating her ability to make sophisticated choices in her writing. There are occasional elements of awkwardness or loss of control as she experiments with ambitious ideas and structures, but overall this is the work of an exceptionally competent and versatile writer.
