This suggested spelling programme can help children achieve the Primary Framework learning objectives from Strand 6: Word structure and spelling. The programme is designed to provide you with ideas and materials that can be used throughout the school year.

Spelling programme

This suggested spelling programme for Year 3 contains:

  • activities and approaches to use during whole-class sessions
  • extension activities for children who require extra work
  • practice examples of words for children to focus on.

Learning objectives

The Year 3 learning objectives are:

  • Spell high- and medium-frequency words.
  • Recognise a range of prefixes and suffixes, understanding how they modify meaning and spelling, and how they assist in decoding long complex words.
  • Spell unfamiliar words, using known conventions including grapheme-phoneme correspondence and morphological rules.
