- To distinguish between the spelling and meaning of homophones, for example, new and knew, and heard and herd.
Unit 2
- To investigate, collect and classify spelling patterns related to the formation of plurals, for example, church and churches, and box and boxes.

Unit 2
- To understand how suffixes change the function of words (e.g. verbs into nouns: create – creation, nouns into verbs: apology – apologise).
