Partnership and community

  • Date: December 2010
  • Programme: Narrowing the gaps
  • Topic/theme: White British Boys
  • Number in series: 10
  • School name: West Grantham Federation
  • Local authority: Lincolnshire
  • Phase: Cross phase
  • The school places a high premium on recognising and rewarding pupils’ endeavour, attendance and achievement. The foyer has large, bright photographs of the head boy and head girl and a folder celebrates the exceptional personal achievements of former pupils.
  • Pupils like the rewards system. Badges are awarded by senior staff and a small number of prestigious awards are made, such as an international visit.
  • The school has effective and sustained engagement with parents and families. In Year 11, this includes short monthly progress review meetings with each pupil, parent(s) and the principal. This level of commitment by senior leaders to work on a regular and personal basis with every pupil is a striking feature of practice at the school. There is a strong personal expectation that parents participate, with meetings scheduled outside the schools day where necessary.
  • The federation maximises opportunities to support transition, There are close working relationships between school senior leaders and an extended, six week induction programme for pupils to build relationships, confidence and partnership between the schools.
