You can review the impact of the improvement process by judging how far and in what ways you have achieved specific outcomes. Each outcome will be best judged by the subject leader, department, line manager, senior leadership team or an external consultant.

Intended outcomes

Subject leader and department

The subject leader and department can evaluate the following outcomes.

  • The department makes use of the previous year’s Year 9 data to identify a key curriculum target for improving reading in Years 9 and 10.
  • Use is made of guided reading to develop pupils’ levels of competence and independence.
  • The department makes use of data and consultation to identify barriers to learning, and key interventions were planned to reduce barriers.
  • The departmental process of pairing for collaborative and professional development opportunities impacts on teachers’ practice.

Subject leader and line manager

The subject leader and line manager can evaluate the following outcomes.

  • In the taught units, the reading strategies improve pupils’ rates of progress or grade outcomes.
  • The departmental process of pairing for collaborative and professional development opportunities impacts on teachers’ practice.

Subject leader, line manager, senior leadership team and external consultant

The subject leader, line manager, senior leadership team and external consultant can evaluate these outcomes.

  • The department has the capacity to sustain the use of the reading strategy to improve pupils’ standards in future exam-based preparation and coursework tasks.
  • Support is provided to any English teachers in need of it to incorporate guided reading more consistently into their practice.
