Element 2: Leading improvement in teaching and learning

Find out how to use this element to improve planning for progression in English.

Using this element

This element is designed to secure improvement over a six-week period. Your department can use it flexibly depending on its key priorities. It outlines:

  • a process for improving the teaching of reading and writing skills
  • ways to develop the climate for learning to help pupils be more functional and independent and to remove barriers to their learning.

Key focus

This six-week improvement process focuses on how to improve the quality of teaching and learning, the climate of learning and the promotion of progression and independence. By matching teaching approaches to pupils’ needs, improved teaching will engage all learners and help pupils achieve rates of progress in English.

  • Using the quality standards

Senior and subject leaders can find the outcomes and long-term benefits of using these quality standards as part of this six-week improvement process.

  • Approach

A suggested six-week improvement plan you can download and adapt to suit the needs of your department. This includes specific issues that this approach can address.

  • Review

Review the impact of the improvement process by judging how far and in what ways you have achieved each of these eight outcomes.
