Element 1: Leading improvement in planning

Find out how to use this element to improve planning for progression in English.

Using this element

This element is designed to secure improvement over a six-week period. Your department can use it flexibly depending on its key priorities. It outlines:

  • planning sessions to help your department use the Framework for secondary English to develop more coherent strands of progression
  • processes for paired work and joint planning by your teachers
  • a review of progress and the planning of next steps to make sure the department continues to improve rates of progress for all your pupils.

Key focus

This six-week process focuses on improving planning for English to improve the pace, challenge and engagement of pupils. Planning for progression through Key Stages 3 and 4 is most effective when matched to pupils’ needs. This element will help you develop this planning to make sure that all pupils achieve expected rates of progress in each key stage.
