Element 1: Leading improvement in planning
Find out how to use this element to improve planning for progression in English.
Using this element
This element is designed to secure improvement over a six-week period. Your department can use it flexibly depending on its key priorities. It outlines:
- planning sessions to help your department use the Framework for secondary English to develop more coherent strands of progression
- processes for paired work and joint planning by your teachers
- a review of progress and the planning of next steps to make sure the department continues to improve rates of progress for all your pupils.
This six-week process focuses on improving planning for English to improve the pace, challenge and engagement of pupils. Planning for progression through Key Stages 3 and 4 is most effective when matched to pupils’ needs. This element will help you develop this planning to make sure that all pupils achieve expected rates of progress in each key stage.
Senior and subject leaders can find out the benefits of using the quality standards to help achieve departmental consistency, as part of the six-week improvement process. This also includes a checklist to evaluate planning.
A suggested six-week improvement plan you can download and adapt to suit the needs of your department. This includes specific issues that this approach can address.
