Joshua needs to continue to have opportunities to take pleasure in reading through discussion and drama. The range of high-frequency words he can read needs to be extended so that his reading becomes more fluent and better paced. Currently, Joshua is working within phonic phase 3 from Letters and Sounds, and able to recognise some digraphs. Continuing this work using the same systematic phonics programme will be important, as will providing opportunities for Joshua to read aloud.
Building on his basic understanding of books shared with the whole class, Joshua can be helped to recognise typical features of different sorts of texts, for example 'good' and 'bad' characters, and differences between fiction and information books. He also needs encouragement to see that asking questions about parts of a text is not a negative thing to do, but part of the way in which meanings may be explored.
