Element 3: Leading improvement in assessment and pupil tracking

Find out how to use this element to improve planning for progression in English.

Using this element

This element is designed to secure improvement over a six-week period. Your department can use it flexibly depending on its key priorities. It includes:

  • planning sessions to help the department to use the Assessing Pupils’ Progress (APP) processes
  • opportunities for teachers to work in pairs for collaborative planning, peer support and joint standardisation
  • a review of progress and planning of next steps.

Key focus

APP is an approach that delivers both a snapshot of pupils’ attainment and progress at a given time, and a profile of curriculum targets for further improvement. It supports Assessment for Learning (AfL). Both teachers and pupils will know what they need to do to improve and to be clear about the best ways to make progress.

  • Using the quality standards

Senior and subject leaders can find out the benefits of using the quality standards to help achieve departmental consistency, as part of the six-week improvement process. This also includes a checklist to evaluate assessment and pupil tracking.

  • Approach

A suggested six-week improvement plan you can download and adapt to suit the needs of your department. This includes specific issues that this approach can address.

  • Review

Review the impact of the improvement process by judging how far and in what ways you have achieved each of these ten outcomes.
