Narrowing the Gaps in science

There are significant differences or ‘gaps’ in the attainment of different groups of pupils in science. If we raise the attainment of underperforming pupils we can ‘narrow the gaps’ in science.

What groups contribute to gaps in attainment?

Categories of underperforming pupils in science:

  • Free School meals (FSM)
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • English as an additional language (EAL)
  • Gifted and talented
  • SEN pupils

FSM pupils underachieve the most in science particularly at the higher GCSE grades.

How can we Narrow the Gaps in science?

Successful schools have a relentless focus on narrowing the gap for all pupils, particularly those entitled to FSM. The outcomes in these schools and the strategies used to attain them fall into four areas:

  • Know the Gap: Which of our pupils are underperforming or not making good progress?
  • Narrow the Gap: What strategies can we use to increase the progress of students who are dropping behind?
  • Mind the Gap: How do we track pupils’ attainment and progress based on assessment for learning and periodic assessment?
  • Celebrate success!: What worked well and can be repeated? What still could be improved?
