The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) gives the public the right of access to information held by public authorities and requires public authorities to make this information available. The intention of the Act is to increase visibility into the work of public bodies, to ensure that policy-making processes are fair, democratic and open.

Certain classes of information, such as information relating to security, are exempt from the Act.

FOI Publication Scheme

To comply with the Act, this Publication Scheme sets out:

  • what information the Department will make available, classified by type of information; and
  • how you can access the information


The information posted in this section lists the requests made to, and the information received in response from, the Department since January 2005 where the material is new or of wider interest, but does not include identifying details of the requesters.

It also explains how you can access unpublished information through the Information Asset Register and gives details of who to contact at the Department if you have questions about the FOIA.

Every effort is made to post disclosures on the website as soon as possible after they are released.

Submitting an FOI request

Requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act need to be made using the Contact us form or in writing to the Department. You must include your name, a return address and a description of the information required. Make your request as specific as possible. If it is too broad, we may ask you to clarify it which could mean a delay in our response.
