Children at the centre

Between autumn 2001 and summer 2003, Ofsted inspected 23 early excellence centres and two early excellence networks, to see how well they fulfil their purpose and to pilot the multidisciplinary inspection of education, care and adult learning. The report identifies features of effective practice and makes recommendations about areas where improvement is needed.

Early Years: firm foundations

Firm foundations covers the two-year period between April 2003 and March 2005 when Ofsted carried out the second programme of inspections against national standards. During that programme, for the first time, Ofsted has awarded each childminder or day-care provider registered by Ofsted a judgement on the quality of childcare. The publication is also available as a mini-site.

Early years: Getting on well

Getting on well is the second national report on how early years and childcare providers are supporting Every Child Matters outcomes for children. It focuses on how the best providers are promoting children's enjoyment and achievement, and helping them to make a positive contribution.

Getting on well uses evidence from Ofsted's inspections and surveys during the year April 2006 to March 2007 to show to what extent children in registered settings are enjoying their learning, feel valued and have good relationships with other children and adults. It includes examples of improvements made in response to issues raised at inspection.

The quality of education development since 1997-98 in the private, voluntary and independent sector

This overview report is based on the nursery education inspections of a cohort of private, voluntary and independent institutions between February 1998 and March 1999. The institutions had previously been inspected between September 1996 and March 1998. Ofsted’s registered nursery inspectors had judged that the provision was acceptable in promoting the desirable outcomes, but that there were weaknesses that needed to be tackled without delay. Those judgements led inspectors to recommend that the next inspections should take place in one to two years.
