Women into Construction

The Olympic Delivery Authority’s (ODA's) Women into Construction project aims to use the London 2012 Games to increase the number of women working in construction.

What is the Women into Construction project?

The project is designed to promote construction-related employment opportunities for women and is funded by the London Development Agency and ConstructionSkills.

Activities include:

  • recruiting women interested in working in the construction industry.
  • sourcing direct employment and construction-related work placements for women with contractors on the Olympic Park.
  • providing training and support to women on the Park to ensure job satisfaction and career development.
  • offering post-employment training.

What does the Women into Construction project offer?

  • Employment support
  • CV and interview skills workshops
  • Pre-employment training
  • Training to ensure that women have the right skills and are qualified to work on site
Pre-employment training is free to participants and covers a variety of areas up to NVQ level 2:

Work placements

Work placements provide newly-trained tradeswomen with a chance to be placed on the Olympic Park, to build on the skills and knowledge they have gained in college, with valuable site experience.

The work placements are 16 hours a week, for 13 weeks, with a designated site supervisor. Work placements are unpaid but participants receive expenses.

Continued employment

The project aims to support women working on site to remain in continued employment. When a contract is coming to an end, two dedicated employment and skills managers will help people access other opportunities available on the Olympic Park.

Financial support

The Women into Construction project also provides support towards childcare and travel expenses while training or starting on site.
