The meeting provides heads of government with the opportunity to discuss Commonwealth and global issues, and to jointly decide upon policies and initiatives. Joint decision making and consensus are of great importance to the Commonwealth.
The first CHOGM was in 1971, in Singapore. Each meeting takes place in an informal, 'retreat' setting, where it is believed a more frank exchange of views can take place.
Issues discussed at previous CHOGMs include: human rights, law, information technology, youth affairs and debt management.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) this year is in Perth, Australia 28 – 30 October. Strategic issues affecting the Commonwealth will be discussed. The UK government is committed to reinvigorating the Commonwealth and hopes that this CHOGM will be a transformational opportunity.
