About Us

  • What is Stabilisation ( 1 Article )
The Stabilisation Unit is the Government’s centre of expertise and best practice in stabilisation, and home of the Civilian Stabilisation Group (CSG). The Unit was set up to respond to the complex challenges of fragile and conflict-afflicted states, and works with countries to enhance their capacity for self-governance. The Unit reports to the Ministry of Defence, Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Department for International Development, and includes staff from each parent Department.
    Our Mission
    • To co-ordinate and support cross-government stabilisation planning and execution
    • To ensure the rapid and integrated delivery of targeted expertise in a cross-government approach
    • To lead on stabilisation lesson-learning and assist with implementation

  • More about the Unit ( 1 Article )

What is the Stabilisation Unit’s role Across UK Government?

Develop integrated planning and delivery with other Government departments:

    • develop an early common understanding of the issues in conflict-affected and fragile states, help shape the strategic approach and develop a coherent, prioritised set of realistic objectives.
    • provide mechanisms for orchestrated delivery of the approach, reporting on progress and reviewing outcomes.
    • deliver best practice and support the development of policy.
    • advise Departments on specific thematic issues, such as Security Sector Reform.
    • lead on the collation and dissemination of cross-government stabilisation lessons.
    • support pre-deployment preparation for Afghanistan and other military exercises.
    • formulate best practice with international partners.

  • Where We Work ( 1 Article )

The Unit works on fragile states prioritised by the Government, with a specific focus on those countries where close cooperation between international partners and military and civilian personnel is essential to achieve stability.

The Unit provides support to a range of countries including Pakistan, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Palestine and Kosovo. The primary focus of the Stabilisation Unit’s work is currently on Afghanistan.

The SU have recently deployed an international Stabilisation Response Team (SRT) to assess Libya’s interim stabilisation needs.
