Dstl employees 3500 people and it is the full responsibility of the Internal Communiations Manager (ICM) to ensure that all staff are fully informed of things that affect them.
The role requires a highly experienced internal communications professional. The role covers a very broad and extensive number of areas and would be suitable for a person who is motivated by challenge, change and a varied workload. Although a knowledge of the defence industry/public sector would be useful, more important is the ability to quickly adapt to the business environment and achieve aims from day one. This role has a high volume workload and will require an individual who can prioritise, manage upwards and deliver high volumes of outputs. The ICM would be expeceted to act as a consultant with senior individuals, as well as manage a broad range of channels in delivering communications. Great planning is essential, as well as the ability to reactively develop and deliver new messages in short timescales.
Key areas of accountability are:
Responsibility for all staff communications - 3500 staff, across four sites - routine and crisis communications
Development and implementation of Dstl's Internal Communications Strategy (in line with corporate goals)
Provision of communications support to all internal projects, as necessary
Assistance to the Chief Executive and Executive Directors with the production of internal road shows and presentations
Production of a monthly briefing pack (Team Talk) to be disseminated to all staff within Dstl
Production of all in-house media, including the staff magazine (Distil), weekly online newsletter (The NiB), content for some of the Intranet (nexus) and other ad hoc internal marketing material
Design and production of all corporate publications (The Corporate Plan, The Business Plan and the Annual Report)
Oversight of Dstl's Education Outreach process
Oversight of the process to generate awareness of the Dstl's work and its impact
Provision of communications advice and guidance across all areas of the business
Provision of communications consultation within the business (for senior members of staff)
Management of Dstl's corporate brand and identity
Line management of 3 members of staff
Extensive experience in internal communications. Management of communications channels. Ability to identify and implement new and existing communication methods.
Ability to develop and implement internal communications plans across a variety of areas
Ability to manage and prioritise a varied workload according to business objectives
Writing, presentational and editorial skills
Listening and influencing skills
Coaching/mentoring of immediate team
Ability to network across all levels, showing high levels of tenacity.
Excellent project management skills
Crisis management communications
A strong desire to develop a broad understanding of the Dstl business, in line with rapidly developing a broad range of communication skills.
Broader communications experience.
Line management experience
Full Driving licence - this role will involve visits to other sites
This role ensures that Dstl staff understand the role that they have to play in delivering Dstl’s Corporate Plan and therefore contributing to Dstl’s success
Management of the Internal Communications overall budget with a constant financial view of balancing quality of outputs with cost
