Brief Description

Job purpose:

Working as part of the web team, you will take the lead on a variety of user experience projects for The National Archives’ website,, and will be responsible for navigation, organisation and interaction design elements of projects.

Through elegant interaction design, you will be improving the experience of The National Archives’ website for our customers. You’ll be collaborating with technical and non-technical specialists throughout The National Archives to find streamlined solutions to complex problems.

Role and Responsibilities:

Working within the web team but across multiple departments you will:
• Champion user experience and online accessibility throughout The National Archives, in conjunction with the User Experience Manager
• Understand the needs, tasks and goals of users of The National Archives’ website and channel these into recommendations and solutions
• Manage a range of user experience projects of varying size and complexity, making sure you deliver them to time and within scope
• Prepare, conduct and report on usability testing
• Conduct requirements gathering, interviews and user research with customers and colleagues
• Create wireframes, prototypes and information architectures for
• Carry out and write up expert usability evaluations and accessibility reviews
• Develop use cases for interaction design projects
• Present findings, ideas and recommendations to colleagues across The National Archives
• Evaluate third-party software for accessibility and usability, liasing directly with suppliers



• Experience in a user experience role, encompassing usability, user-centred design, accessibility testing, interaction design and information architecture
• A good understanding of user experience and user centred design principles and methodologies, with the ability to develop inventive solutions to complex problems
• Teamwork and communications: with excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills both orally and in writing, you must be a confident and persuasive communicator and a great team member
• Solid expertise with prototyping tools (Visio, Axure, Fireworks etc.)
• Confident using a range of research methodologies and techniques including usability tests, card sorting, ethnographic research, heuristic evaluations
• Adaptable and flexible, you must have the initiative and ability to drive your projects forward, plan and resource your projects and organise your workload to deliver projects to agreed deadlines without compromising quality.
• Methodical and meticulous, you’ll have good visual design skills and will care about every detail and feature of a web page


• Qualification in Human-Computer Interaction/Human Factors or equivalent.
• Experience of working in a PRINCE2 or AGILE project management environment.
• A good understanding of the public sector and government
• Experience of working on interaction design projects, particularly involving search or maps
