Brief Description

We are looking for outstanding individuals to act as the Chair and Tax Director of the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS). The OTS is an independent office of HM Treasury that provides advice to the Chancellor on simplifying the UK tax system. Its aim is to develop the evidence base and recommendations required to pursue reforms that simplify the tax system and reduce the burden of tax compliance on business and individuals.

Vacancy description

The Chair leads the OTS board meetings and the Office’s engagement with the Treasury Ministers. The board is responsible for shaping the strategy and priorities of the OTS, deciding on proposals for reviews to put forward to the Chancellor and agreeing key recommendations in the OTS reviews. The Chair also represents the OTS at public engagements and can be requested to present evidence on the Office’s work to Parliamentary Committees.

You must be a leader within your chosen field with an ability to influence at the most senior level. You will have a general understanding of taxation and a good appreciation of the tradeoffs Governments face in making tax policy. We are interested in individuals from a range of backgrounds including commercial, public or voluntary sectors or with experience in the tax profession.

Tax Director
The Tax Director of the OTS is responsible for providing the intellectual leadership and guidance for the Office, ensuring it delivers robust evidence based reviews and recommendations that are deliverable, will simplify the tax system, and stand to generate real reductions in compliance burdens on tax payers. The Tax Director also represents the Office in public engagements and in the media (with the support of the OTS press officer) and can be requested to appear before Parliamentary Committees.

For this role we are seeking a leading tax professional with extensive technical understanding of business and personal tax, an appreciation of the operational implications of tax policy change, and experience working at a senior level. Successful candidates will have the potential to work within the wider political debate and will understand the tradeoffs involved in tax policy making.
