Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality
Working for
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality: Moving
Forward
In 2010 the Government
issued Working for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Equality,. Now a new action plan Working for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
Transgender Equality: Moving Forward, launched in
March 2011, sets out the specific actions we will take across
Government, in areas such as education, workplaces, in public
services and in our international work, to deliver on those
commitments. It also sets out new areas of work that we are
undertaking.
Tackling
homophobia and transphobia in sport: a Charter for
Action
One of our key commitments given in
Working for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Equality: Moving Forward is the action Government
will take to tackle homophobia and transphobia in sport.
This work is aided by a Charter, supported by British sport’s five main
national governing bodies, which calls for action at every level to
tackle this issue.
The Football Association, the Lawn Tennis
Association, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Rugby
Football League and the Rugby Football Union joined the London
Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) in
becoming the first signatories of the Charter for Action, which
aims to makes sport a welcoming environment for LGB&T
people.
The Charter contains four statements:
- we believe that everyone should be able to participate in and
enjoy sport – whoever they are and whatever their background;
- we believe that sport is about fairness and equality, respect
and dignity. Sport teaches individuals how to strive and succeed,
how to cope with success and disappointment, and brings people
together with a common goal;
- we are committed to making these values a reality for lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender people. We will work
together, and individually, to rid sport of homophobia and
transphobia; and
- we will make sport a welcome place for everyone – for those
participating in sport, those attending sporting events and for
those working or volunteering in sports at any level. We will
work with all these groups to ensure they have a voice, and to
challenge unacceptable behaviour.
The Government Equalities Office is
responsible for policy relating to sexual orientation and
gender reassignment. This includes civil partnerships,
the Equality Act 2010 and equality policy for lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender people.
“Working
for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality" was
launched by the Prime Minister on 16th June 2010. The ambitious
programme of work outlined the actions Government will take to
address outdated prejudices and tear down barriers to equal
opportunities at a Pride reception held at No 10 Downing Street,
attended by GEO ministers, Rt Hon Theresa May and Lynne
Featherstone, entrepreneurs, celebrities and those who work for LGB
and T equality. You can view the press
release here.
