GEO is a Home Office unit, which operates across Government. GEO
has responsibility within Government for equality strategy and
legislation and takes the lead on issues relating to women,
sexual orientation and transgender equality matters.
The Government's Equality
Strategy sets out our vision for a strong, modern and fair
Britain. It is built on two principles of equality – equal
treatment and equal opportunity. This means building a
society where no one is held back because of who they are, or where
they come from.
In line with the Government’s aims, GEO’s
priorities are to:
- Help create a fair and flexible labour market that draws on the
talents of all and builds a strong economy.
- Change culture and attitudes; reduce prejudice which holds
people back from achieving their potential and tackle
discrimination, hatred and violence at home and abroad.
- Empower individuals and communities by promoting greater
participation in public, political and community life.
- Ensure concerted action to embed equality across Government and
beyond and reform the equality landscape.
We also deliver international equality
obligations such as the implementation of the Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
and promote the UK’s Equality Strategy in European, Commonwealth
and wider international negotiations.
