Housing
Finding a place to live and the right support can be hard to do. Valuing People Now wants people with learning disabilities to have more choice about where they live and who they live with.
People with learning disabilities and their families need;
- Information about housing
- help to know how to get the money and
-
support to make it all happen
Many people with learning disability, unlike the rest of the population, do not choose were they want to live. More than half of people with learning disabilities live with their families and most live in residential care. It can be hard to get clear information about the different options. Below you will find some information which may help you:
Feeling Settled is a new guide to moving from residential care to supported living supported by Valuing People Now, the Care Quality Commission and Association of Directors of Adult Social Care (ADASS).
It describes how different agencies and people need to be involved and makes sure the person with a learning disability is at the centre of the planning all the time.
Feeling Settled is launched together with the latest guidance from the Care Quality Commission on registration for supported living. Read more about this on the CQC website http://www.cqc.org.uk/publications.cfm?fde_id=17217
Feeling Settled uses case studies and examples to help commissioners and providers to develop real person centred solutions.
A summary of the guide has also been produced as an ‘NDTi Insight’ available at the NDTi website at http://www.ndti.org.uk/publications/ndti-insights/

Valuing People Now has also worked together with Housing Options and have now updated and written new resources on different housing options for people with learning disabilities and their families.

Making Money Easier has published new resources to help people understand more about money and more options about housing. Making Money Easier is the umbrella name for a range of tools to support people with learning disabilities to access banking and financial services. The tools were developed by United Response in partnership with ARC (the Association for Real Change, an umbrella body for the learning disability sector) and funded by the Friends Provident Foundation, Department of Work and Pensions, CFEB (Consumer Financial Education Body) and HSBC Plc bank.
The titles in the Making Money Easier series (all available as printed booklets) are:
· Choosing and Opening a bank account
· Using a bank account
· Explaining some of the words used in banking (a glossary and companion to the above two guides)
· Your money - your home - a guide to support people to live independently with information on managing bills and budgeting
· Your money - your insurance - a guide to support people to choose the insurance they need (particularly home contents insurance, which is often an issue for people in supported housing)
· Moving on and planning ahead - a guide to support people who want to move towards more independent living
