The role of cycling in cities and how public policy can promote bicycle use was the theme of a keynote address by Acting Secretary-General Michael Kloth at this year's global cycling planning conference in Vancouver, Canada on 26 June. Kloth highlighted the role of cycling in efficient urban transport and detailed several trends that will impact both cities and cycling. Safety is a key consideration and the chair of the International Transport Forum's working group on Cycling Safety, Niels Tørsløv, Director of the Traffic Department for the City of Copenhagen, will present key messages emerging from that group’s international review of cycling safety trends and policies at Velo-City on June 29.
