Brief Description
This is a development role to provide a base level contribution to Dstl projects.
As a member of the Modelling & Analysis Team within the Physical Sciences Department, you will use logical thinking and problem-solving skills, together with mathematical knowledge, tools and techniques to develop models of systems, equipment and processes involved in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) defence. You will use the models, analyse the output and provide key insight and advice into decisions on the defence capability for UK MoD and its allies against a CBRN event.
Vacancy description
You will need to liaise with scientific staff working in other disciplines to gather information on equipment and model requirements, before using your mathematical modelling skills to formulate and implement models, either using mathematical modelling packages or a suitable programming language. You will also need to liaise with software engineers, who will be responsible for integrating your models into larger systems.
You will have to exercise good judgement to reach evidence-based conclusions and decisions supported by analysis. It is important that you are an effective communicator and a team player.

• CBRN Inventiveness Programme – Applicability of Algorithms used in astronomy to reduce false alarm rates in CBR Detectors.
Skills
Essential: At least two years experience of the formulation and development of mathematical models of physical systems and experience of at least one of the areas listed under Desirable.
Desirable: Experience of more than one of the following areas: Fluid dynamics, Probability and Statistics; Meteorology / Atmospheric dispersion; Programming skills (e.g. C++); Understanding physical principles of detectors and protective equipment; Chemical and biomedical sciences; Data fusion / assimilation; Optimisation techniques; Risk assessment.
Qualifications
Essential: A degree (or higher) in Mathematics, Statistics or a Physical Science.
Desirable: Relevant postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience.
