Brief Description

As team leader of the Electro-Optic and Infra-Red (EO-IR) Systems team you will provide an equal balance of technical leadership and people management. A key aspect of your role will be defining and driving forward the technical capability of the team.
You will lead a diverse and multi-disciplinary team, delivering specialist sensor system advice to stakeholders; supported by high-fidelity computer simulation & modelling of sensor system performance and innovative defence science & technology research (e.g. 4th generation target acquisition systems). The scope of the technologies addressed within the team include electro-optics, thermal / infra-red, ultra-violet, multi and hyper-spectral, active and polarimetric sensing, alongside processing and exploitation technologies which includes a developing capability for stand-off biometrics.
The team has a complex and varied customer base and you will be required to engage with stakeholders across the UK and international communities supporting the Programme Office and Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) to translate requirements into coherent programmes of work, in addition to direct support on operational requirements. A key aspect of this role will be to further develop the Group’s portfolio of support to the Equipment Procurement Programme within DE&S. The cross-domain nature of the work programme includes programmes in ISTAR collector systems, COIN and CBR device detection and emerging threat systems.
You will also provide direct support to the Group Leader in the management of the Group, contributing to capability planning and development, resourcing and project delivery.
 

Vacancy description

This is a management role with a roughly equal balance of time spent on management and technical leadership and on personal technical contribution.
Direct management of approximately 13 team members
 

• You will have a good understanding of the fundamental science and technology of Electro-Optic & Infra-Red sensors and laser systems.
• You will also have a good understanding of Intelligence Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) Collect and Target Acquisition (TA) systems and UK capability
• Knowledge of the ISR platforms, sensor performance modelling and image exploitation is desirable.


The EO-IR Systems team provide cross-domain expertise to MoD, Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), Counter Terrorism Science & Technology Centre (CTSTC) and Other Government Departments (OGD’s). Domains or Capability Sponsor areas include Battlespace Manoeuvre (BM), Theatre Airspace (TA), Air & Littoral Manoeuvre (ALM), Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition & Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Deep Target Attack (DTA) and Above Water Capability (AWC). The team supports programmes in all of the aforementioned areas and a moderate level of domain knowledge is required.

• To network with other Team Leaders and stakeholders to ensure a coherent approach and capability across the laboratory
• To implement Dstl's policies and ensure compliance with the Management System.
• To maintain regular contact with Project Managers to enable effective performance management and development of team members.
• To provide specific technical contribution as agreed by Line Manager.
 

Qualifications

• You will have a relevant first degree (or equivalent) in Physics or another physical science or in an engineering discipline
• Ideally you will have attained a higher class of membership of a professional body (e.g. Chartered Physicist with the Institute of Physics)
 

Experience

• Will have successfully managed delivery of work and have supervised staff

• You will have a good understanding of the fundamental science and technology of Electro-Optic & Infra-Red sensors and laser systems.
• You will also have a good understanding of Intelligence Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) Collect and Target Acquisition (TA) systems and UK capability
• Knowledge of the ISR platforms, sensor performance modelling and image exploitation is desirable.
