_DSC0098BTPA was established on 1 July 2004 as a result of the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003. The Act transferred responsibility for British Transport Police from the Strategic Rail Authority and the BTP Committee, which were jointly responsible for the force, to the new police authority.

The Act also gave British Transport Police a wholly statutory, rather than part-statutory and part-contractual, jurisdiction over the railways.
