Creating a fairer Britain
The new public sector equality duty came into force on 5 April as part of the Equality Act 2010. Our guidance and resources will help public bodies meet the duty. Find out more
Every three years we are required by law to report to Parliament on how far Britain has come towards being a fair society - and how far we still have to go. 'How fair is Britain?' brings together evidence from a range of sources to build a portrait of equality in Britain in 2010, and will inform the priorities of our future work.
The public sector equality duty (PSED) is the latest part of the Equality Act 2010 to come into force. The new duty gives responsibilities to public authorities and those working on their behalf.
The duty requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations across all aspects of equality protected by the Act.
Some elements of the PSED have yet to be finalised. The general duty has come into force in England, Scotland and Wales, but the specific duties are still being considered, except in Wales where they already apply.
