Access for disabled people

The Department aims to improve transport provision for disabled people - whether as pedestrians, public and special transport users, or motorists - while also improving accessibility in public places.

Further information about what we are doing to make public transport accessible can be found by clicking on the appropriate heading below.  Each section also includes contact details for further information and queries.

Access to shipping is governed by international laws and standards. EU Regulation 1177/2010 concerning the rights of passengers when travelling by sea and inland waterway will apply in the UK from 18 December 2012. The Regulation will provide disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility (PRMs) with the same opportunities to travel by water as they have in the rail and aviation sectors across the EU.

Access to aviation is governed by international laws and standards. Since 2007, European Regulation 1107/2006, which concerns the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility, has given rights to disabled people when travelling by air.
